HISTORY OF THE CIRCUIT

Since its introduction to the Formula 1 schedule in 2009, Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, has stood out as a key race location. Hermann Tilke's design includes distinct features such as a pit lane exit tunnelling under the circuit and spectator grandstands that are mostly covered, providing shade from the sun. The circuit is also famous for its dramatic night races, supported by a sophisticated permanent lighting system, which is recognized as the largest of its kind in any sports venue worldwide.

The construction of Yas Marina Circuit was a formidable undertaking, involving more than 14,000 workers and completed within a brief two-year period from 2007 to 2009. The circuit was partly modified in 2021 to improve racing. These modifications were aimed at enhancing the race dynamics by redesigning several curves and straights. 

Yas Marina has played a pivotal role in the history of Formula 1. It has consistently served as the backdrop for the season's final race, heightening the drama and stakes of the championship conclusions.

For example, the circuit witnessed a big moment in 2021, when the world championship title was decided between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Verstappen eventually became the champion after a dramatic end to the race.
